ASA Minority Fellowship Program

Scholarship Description

Since the Minority Fellowship Program’s (MFP) founding in 1974, the program has worked to ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to assume disciplinary leadership roles and conduct research that is relevant to today’s society.

Scholarship Details

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be enrolled in a predoctoral sociology graduate program
  • Must identify as a member of a racial or ethnic minority group underrepresented in sociology
  • Must demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to advancing sociological research on social issues
  • Must intend to pursue a professional career in research, teaching, or applied sociology

Application Process

  1. Complete the online fellowship application form through the ASA website
  2. Submit academic transcripts and a current curriculum vitae
  3. Provide letters of recommendation from faculty members or advisors familiar with your academic and research abilities
  4. Include a statement outlining research interests, professional goals, and how your work contributes to addressing societal inequalities
  5. Submit the full application by the posted deadline for consideration
  6. Await notification from the ASA regarding selection and fellowship award details

To date, the ASA MFP has supported more than 500 predoctoral sociology graduate students by providing a Fellowship Package that includes a monthly stipend for living expenses, financial support for professional development, travel and accommodations for participation at two ASA Annual Meetings, and networking and mentorship opportunities. Former MFP fellows have gone on to serve as presidents of the American Sociological Association, distinguished faculty, award-winning scholars and teachers, and influential social scientists working in government agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses.
