What is The Aerosol Society
The Aerosol Society is a scientific, non-profit organisation that promotes the study of airborne particles (aerosols). It brings together scientists from academia, industry, and government with interests ranging from environmental aerosols and climate modelling to inhalation science, nanotechnology, and air pollution. The Society supports collaboration, research dissemination, training, and community building among aerosol scientists through its events, conferences, publications, and membership network.

Grants and Awards — What the Society Offers
The Aerosol Society provides a variety of grants, bursaries, and awards aimed at supporting researchers at different career stages, from undergraduates to doctoral students and early-career scientists. These include:

  • Undergraduate Research Bursary: funds a summer internship for an undergraduate student to work on an aerosol science project.
  • Doctoral Student Award: recognises and encourages early-stage doctoral students working on aerosol science.
  • Aerosol Science Career Development Grant: supports new or emerging aerosol scientists to carry out research projects that help their career development, typically with grants in the range of £2,500 to £5,000.
  • Early Career Scientist Travel Award: provides financial support for early-career members to attend conferences or events where they will present their work.
  • Doctoral Thesis Prize: awarded to recent PhD graduates whose thesis in aerosol science is judged to represent an outstanding body of original research.
  • Additional awards include a Young Investigator Award, Emerging Scientist Award, and Carers’ Award, supporting accessibility and inclusion in research activities.

Eligibility and Conditions

  • Most awards require membership in The Aerosol Society. Student membership is free, with other membership categories available.
  • Undergraduate bursaries are for students enrolled at UK or Irish universities undertaking a summer internship in aerosol science.
  • Doctoral awards are for early-stage doctoral students working in aerosol science at UK or Irish universities.
  • Career development grants are for scientists within a certain time frame after their PhD, with projects focused on aerosol science.
  • Travel awards are for members presenting original aerosol-science research at conferences, with applications submitted in advance of travel.

Purpose and Philosophy
The Society aims to nurture new talent, support early-career and undergraduate researchers, and foster ongoing research and development in aerosol science. Through funding, travel support, recognition, and networking opportunities, it encourages commitment to aerosol research across environmental science, health, industrial processes, and other relevant fields. The Society emphasises inclusivity, equality, and broad participation across academia and industry.

Other Member Benefits
Membership also offers access to training courses, conferences, research outputs, newsletters, and networking opportunities with the global aerosol science community.
