MIT THINK Out of the Box Scholars Program

Scholarship Description

THINK caters to students who have done extensive research on the background of a potential research project, but lack the resources to complete the project themselves and are looking for additional guidance in the early stages of their project. The program is organized by a group of undergraduates at MIT.

Scholarship Details

  • Provides up to $1,000 in funding for selected research projects
  • Weekly mentorship meetings with THINK team members for guidance and support
  • Finalists may participate in a four-day, all-expenses-paid trip to MIT’s campus, which includes lab tours, research presentations, and networking opportunities
  • Open to projects in science, technology, and engineering fields
  • Projects must be feasible to complete within one semester and a $1,000 budget

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to students who have extensively researched the background of a potential project
  • Applicants must propose a project with clear goals, an innovative idea, and a practical plan for implementation
  • Projects can span fields such as green technology, practical devices, or software applications

Application Process

  1. Review the THINK program guidelines to ensure your project aligns with the program’s requirements
  2. Develop a detailed project proposal with clear goals, a well-thought-out procedure, and a budget plan
  3. Submit your application, including your project proposal, by the program’s deadline
  4. If selected as a finalist, participate in mentorship meetings and complete your project within the program timeline

Selected finalists have weekly mentorship meetings with THINK team members for technical guidance, helpful resources, and updates on the projects progress and are given up to $1,000 in funding for their project. Additionally, if permitting, finalists are invited to a four-day all-expenses paid trip to MIT’s campus, where they tour labs, present their research to MIT students and faculty, and hang out with members of the THINK team.
